Founder, Tēfa Hallock

Tēfa, pronounced /tee-fah/, is a third-generation Floridian raised in the rural town of Davie. Her grandfather was born on an island in Lake Okeechobee that is now submerged. His family moved to Florida from Estonia, by way of Ellis Island in 1908. Her great grandfather was a riverboat captain who ran supplies down the New River helping to establish the western reaches of Fort Lauderdale. The family also maintained a farm in the rich alluvial soil of the lake shore.

TÄ“fa's summers were full of adventures at Our Lady of Good Counsel Camp near Dunnellon. It was there she first encountered the Rainbow River and fell deeply in love with the diversity of springs ecology. Her desire to protect these unique habitats led her to the Environmental Studies program at Rollins College, where she focused on Policy and Urban Growth Management. During her time at Rollins, she interned with the Department of Environmental Protection helping researchers determine the root cause of filamentous algae proliferation in the Wekiva River system.

Looking to build additional leadership skills in sustainability, Tēfa continued her academic studies at New College of California, where she earned two advanced degrees: a Master of Arts in Sustainable Community Leadership and the nation's first Green MBA with a focus in Environmental Entrepreneurship.

Over the past twenty years, TÄ“fa has been a guiding force for municipalities, non-profits, and private enterprises dedicated to resource-conscious building and land management practices. She is a seasoned green builder who served as the Sustainability Chair on DeLand's City Commission, instituting resource-wise infrastructure updates to their historic downtown. She later became a Certifying Agent for the Florida Green Building Coalition's "Green Local Government" program where she assisted municipalities in reducing their ecological footprint.

Tēfa is a PADI-certified Freediver and Advanced Mermaid using her underwater prowess to capture compelling footage that showcases the beauty and underscores the fragility of the Florida Springs. She leverages this creative expression to raise awareness about what's happening to our precious waterways.
